YERADA FOREST PROJECT
Wintermount has the overall responsibility for the development and implementation of 16,400 hectares of an ecologically depleted area in Yerada, Ghana. This is through an agreement with Signum Ghana Ltd, which holds a state-granted privilege to establish plantation operations.
Presently, the project encompasses:
5300 hectares: Restoration and conservation of low-tree-density scrubland areas, integrating diverse species of timber and crop trees, including endangered ones. This endeavor will yield certified Gold Standard (GS) carbon offsets.
7100 hectares: Creation of a commercial plantation adopting tree species resilient to local conditions, geared towards substantial offset generation and long-term timber value. Primarily featuring teak, renowned for its commercial viability, rapid carbon sequestration, fire resistance, and stable global market demand.
4000 hectares: Rehabilitation of degraded forest regions identified as potential sites for regeneration. This involves implementing heightened protection measures against threats like fire and illegal grazing, alongside selective planting initiatives. These areas mark the initial phase of the project's comprehensive environmental development strategy.
The Yerada Project is committed to dual certification under the Gold Standard and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for sustainable forestry practices.
Our objectives and anticipated impacts include:
Creation of local jobs and economic development
Mitigation of poverty
Implementation of health initiatives
Establishment of training programs
Execution of clean water and sanitation projects
Active engagement in climate action efforts
Management of projects adhering to stringent environmental standards
Preservation and enrichment of biodiversity
Over an initial project duration of 30 years, the Yerada Project is estimated to sequester approximately 5.0 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
